Way back in August 2020, after configuring my controls and graphic settings and performing a couple of test flights, KSYF was my first destination for a “serious” planned flight. I had taken off at KBDU Boulder in a brand-new Savage Cub, and arrived here almost 3 hours later. It had been a test of sorts: to see if MSFS could be used with purely visual navigation in VFR with nothing but a sectional map for reference. And it was a satisfactory experience.
During the next 3 months or so I ended up flying that Cub to all of the 48 lower states, landing at almost 120 airports. I got lost a couple of times and had to restart flights, but I did manage the whole flight without autopilot or any electronic navigations aids.
I would have liked to fly in a Stearman, but of course none were available back then. The flight was almost entirely on stock MSFS, and there was little visual excitement to be had around airports. Very few add-ons where available. I think I managed to find 2 out of those 120. 4 years later there are tons of add-ons. There’s a very nice KBDU available for example, right here on this site. But many of the airports I flew to are still in their somewhat hideous default state. Well, KSYF Saint Francis, Cheyenne County Municipal has now joined the ranks of add-ons. Let’s see if I can get a bit deeper into Kansas next, let’s say KHYS Hays…
Design Notes
Dependencies are listed below. I also used objects from various MS/Asobo hand-crafted airports and world updates, so if you don’t have them installed some objects may be missing.
