With Tante Ju from Berlin-Tempelhof to Lisbon
- Historic Lufthansa Line 22 from 1937 (Multilingual)
The reliability and travel comfort of the Ju 52 have proven themselves over the years. Travel by air became attractive and Deutsche Lufthansa AG expanded its route network to include several long-haul destinations, such as Moscow, Helsinki, London, Athens and even Lisbon, and the Ju 52/3m became the most widely used commercial aircraft in the world.
A flight to Lisbon cost about 170 Reichsmarks. But considering that the average monthly income at the time was about 150 Reichsmarks, these trips were far from affordable for everyone, just as travel to more distant destinations was in itself reserved only for the better-off, regardless of the mode of transportation.
Line 22 of the Deutsche Lufthansa AG went from the now closed airport Berlin-Tempelhof via Stuttgart, Geneva, Marseille and Burgos, to Lisbon. According to the flight schedule, the journey from Tempelhof Airport began at 06:50, arriving in Stuttgart at about 09:20. Connection from Stuttgart to Geneva, however, was only the next morning at 07:30. In Geneva, however, it was possible to change planes for Marseille, and then take off for Burgos the next day. According to the flight schedule, air travelers at that time needed 3 days for this route. Since there was no continuous train connection from Berlin to Lisbon, traveling by plane was probably much more lucrative, but also more dependent on the weather.
As you can see, there were no stopovers to fly to the next destination, but the planes always shuttled back and forth between two airports and the travelers had to change to the next plane at this long-distance destination. On this trip, however, they will not be shuttling, but flying the entire route from Berlin to Lisbon with passengers and baggage. Radio navigation for aviation was still in its infancy, so you will have to fly VFR the entire way.
Have fun and bring the passengers to their destination with safe landings, Koschi
