Independence Air came into operation in 2004 after transitioning from Atlantic Coast Airlines which itself started up in 1989. With a sizeable fleet of 130 aircraft (of which 12 were Airbus A319's) the low cost airline ran into financial problems with rising costs and declared bankruptcy in 2006. Northwest Airlines bought their operating certificate and Independence Air was renamed as Compass Airlines.

Compass Airlines ceased operations in 2020 after a dramatic fall in flights due to the Covid pandemic.
